Dude, It’s Architecture

I have finally seen the movie “The Big Lebowski do to a barber shop opening here in Tampa bearing the name. The converted warehouse in the Channel District is a successful project of urban renewal and attracts young and old from all walks of life, just like the movie.

The barber shop made the front page of our daily rag and graced media pages from here to St. Pete., maybe even beyond. “Dude” is there in his bathrobe and more details can be found online (Google: “lebowski barber shop“).

I quickly learned that the movie is about bowling – not a barber shop and made some observations. I think two are notable for architecture:

1. A bowling alley is just that- no matter where, old or new. They encompass their very own architecture and seem to have that retro look and feel which creates nostalgia and possibly the ambiance for bowling.

2. What do they do to those wood floors that make them so resilient to 13-lb. bowling balls being tossed on them all day? I did some research and a combination of a hard wood like maple, a ridiculously thick layer of urethane and bad lighting can make it seem flawless, however there are always dents.

Great post. I was just at Lebowski Fest in Louisville, KY over the weekend. This week they are kicking-off their “Speed of Sound Tour.” I dont think they are hitting Tampa, but several other places where we have offices. http://www.lebowskifest.com/
