Daily Express Building

I’ve just moved to a new area of London – to the financial district – the City.  In fact I’m living right next to St Paul’s cathedral, which is the most beautiful view to see on the way to work in the mornings.

For all my years in London there has been one building that has taken my heart – the Daily Express Building. I just walked past it on my way home, which reminded me to share this beauty with you.

I am a bit fan of the 30s generally – the fashion, the art, the music and of course the architecture. So I am a little biased. I didn’t have my camera with me, but take a look at this link for some of the best photos I could find on the net. But take a look at these pictures.

The Daily Express Building is on Fleet Street, where all the newspapers used to be located in London. Now most have moved out to Canary Wharf, where the rent is far cheaper. The architects of the Express Building were Ellis and Clarke with Sir Owen Williams, 1930-32, with interiors designed by Robert Atkinson. The building is covered with black Vitrolite and clear glass, with chromium strips. In Atkinson’s lobby there are  plaster reliefs of Industry by Eric Aumonier, lots of silver and gilt including a silvered pendant lamp, as well as an oval staircase.

oh, she is a beauty! when i was living in prague i totally fell for true art-deco architecture – although my fondness for fingerwaves and pincurls may have had something to do with it.
