Empire State of Mind

I HOK New York

HOK New York represents the intersection of two global empires, working in tandem to build dreams out of talent, passion and ideas.  HOK, while based in St. Louis and located in over twenty cities around the world, is on the cusp of experiencing an upsurge in business and publicity throughout New York City.  It is well-known that HOK has earned acclaim for delivering high quality, elegant design solutions for high profile companies, institutions and governments across the globe.  HOK New York is uniquely positioned to supply innovative design solutions both here in “The City” and anywhere else an opportunity emerges.

New York City is arguably the most dynamic place in the world - home to ambition, inspiration and drive.  It’s known as the city that never sleeps because even when you are asleep, your mind is racing, processing how to make the next day better than the day before.  This is an accepted way of life in New York and most of us wouldn’t have it any other way.  How does this lifestyle pair with practicing architecture at HOK?  It means that you are constantly hustling to satisfy your existing clients, actively pursuing new clients and striving for quality in every aspect of the work - all in the spirit of HOK’s mission, creating successful places for people.  Inspiration can walk with you down 5th Avenue, run with you in Central Park, stroll with you in Harlem, and ride with you on the subway.

The energy of this place keeps us coming back for more and the HOK clientele makes our work worth all of the effort.  I’ve had the opportunity to see HOK NY leaders like Kenneth Drucker, Juliette Lam and Chris Laul uphold and promote our brand in one of the most competitive design arenas anywhere.  On several different occasions, I have observed the trio’s poise, fortitude and prowess on behalf of our collective work at venues around Manhattan.  They were recently named ”All Stars” in the industry by New York’s Real Estate Weekly.  The entire management committee exhibits leadership that propels each of us forward and in step with New York’s steadily intense civic rhythm.

After listening to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ latest hit song, “Empire State of Mind”, I couldn’t help but reflect on my own personal transformation into a New Yorker.  I have officially been here for a year-and-a-half, which is just long enough to know whether or not a place is worth investing additional time.  Something about being here allows me to dream bigger dreams and believe that those dreams are attainable.  As the song states, “…there’s nothing you can’t do”.  New Yorkers possess this confidence that embodies everything that they do, from carrying a casual conversation to making a deal happen.  I now understand what it means to have an empire state of mind.  As the saying goes, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere.  The same can be said of HOK.  The future is promising because I am inspired to think so.  As an HOK New Yorker, that is all that needs to be said.
