Blood, sweat, tears and tape…lots and lots of tape

DSC00711
So last night was CANStruction NYC Built Night and I’m a bit crazed from lack of sleep, so this post may be lame.  I’ve participated in CANStruction for the last 5 years or so at different levels of involvement, but I’m always there for build night.

This year HOK NY built a watch for the message of The Time to Give.  As usual the evening started out in good spirits while building the base for the Can Watch to sit on.  There was a lot of joking around and camaraderie, and we were feeling good when we took our dinner break.

We then proceeded onto the ‘watch’ part of the design and that is when the can hit the fan.  Boards weren’t lining up, the structure was twisting and cans were popping out like windows off the Hancock.  With some on site modifications to the design and a trip to Rite Aid for more tape we were able to proceed with the design.

By 10PM fingers were cut, backs were aching and the front was twisting away from the back.  By 12AM we came to terms with the fact that we would have to de-CANStruct and fix the areas which were causing the watch to lean over.  In a wild whirlwind of tape and scissors we completed the Can Watch by 1:30AM.  Finishing touches and cleanup were to follow, along with lots of photos and a walk-through of other competitors’ entries.

All in all the Can Watch came out looking good despite the setbacks.  It’s probably reminiscent of the problems and creative solutions required on a real construction project only with more sardine smell.

Many thanks to all who participated last night – Debbie, Emily, Keith, Kim, Masha, Rain, Sharon and Craig (our non-HOK minion)
