TEDx Atlanta * Billy McLaughlin

You guys are all familiar with these now. These local TED conferences, called TEDx’s here in Atlanta that Unboundary hosts. (x=independantly organized TED event).

Well I’ve done a good bit of writing about these and I’m  about to kick-off the most recent (3rd) installment called RE:LEARN. As with all the TEDx’s so far, we get our brains loose by listening to excellent performers playing powerful music. This TEDx is no different. (See Zoe Keating and Eric Lewis for events prior.)

Enter Billy McLaughlin.

Billy was an famously talented guitarist in his day for his originality and complexity of his compositions and style of playing. However, in the late 90’s Billy was diagnosed with Focal Dystonia, an uncurable neurological disease. After losing almost everything (except his love of music) Billy relearned everything he knew all over again from scratch, with his left hand. In 2007, he made his first comeback performance and he graced us with his presence at TED.

Amazing.

Just listen, and trust me his songs really grow on you. I kept watching the video until I just went to iTunes and bought some. Check out some more documentary footage below on his return to music as one of the greastest musical comebacks of all time.
