A Social-Ecological Urbanity

Once a week, desirably more, realistically less, I peruse the digital catacombs of Architizer like a pirate on the high seas in search of hidden treasures of thought and inspiration. Alas I have found one (and by no means the only one), a bounty rich enough to share with others.

And so I share this thought project by the German based firm of architects and urban intellectuals, N2M. It begins with a quote whereby, “at each stage of history, we tend to be convinced that our present reality is the one that is ‘really’ real. Now we’ve got it figured out! Now we stand at the end of history!” The arrogance by which we …

Hello 2010, We’re Ready for You

virtual-reality-technology-image

Yes, it’s 2010, hurray. It’s no mystery that technology is moving quickly these days. This speed of change is causing us to become increasingly excited, yet perhaps a bit more critical of our interactions with computers in our day to day lives and as they relate to our field of architecture and planning. As the rate of computing power increases ever more quickly for a set unit of time, we have grown to expect technology to be able to do anything. This leads us to ask the technological gods such mundane questions as, “why do we need to launch twenty different software applications to realize the design of a building?” …

BIM – not your mother’s architecture.

In celebration of ‘the Fifth of November’, aka ‘BIM Day’ I thought I’d post some ideas of what BIM (Building Information Modeling/Management) might look like in the future. This could be 20 years or 30 years, or never, but we should never stop thinking ‘what if’. In fact, recently I’ve been thinking about the possibilities so much that I’m getting scared that I don’t really know nearly as much as I should.

At any rate, I’m going to post possible future-casting ideas for the way in which we could be using BIM in the future to harness the power of the ‘building in vitro’. Some of these ideas are simply and process software related, but a majority of the focus is …

A little bit of Whoa to make up for my hiatus

Future alien technolgies travel back in time to bring us… Gaudi Stool.

It’s been a while but this was such a shocking discovery for me that it has forced me back into active blogging. Thanks, inspiration – I’ve missed you!

Taken from a great review blog of this piece of furniture…

A stool inspired by the wonderfully structurally insane churches of Gaudi and created by one wonderfully insane designer, Bram Greenen.

Future… have I told you lately that I love you? … well I SO do. Let’s hang out more!

Vision 2020: Considering the World & Future Architect

If the future of architecture interests you…then visit Vision 2020

From the website…”The project / exhibition aims to be a crystal ball, collecting prospective from noted architects, critics, students, leaders and the public to conceive of the future of our world, through architecture and architect of the future. We invite you to participate!”

What will be the most significant challenge facing architecture and society in 2020 & what is the relevance of architecture in this future?
How will a future “architect” think/operate in 2020, and what skills will be required?
Why are students/young people uniquely positioned to address these issues?

They want to hear what we have to say about …

Future Trends 2008

Last week I was fortunate to attend the Future Trends Conference  (an annual conference put on buy the International Institute of Research). My favourite thing to do is to hear inspirational speakers from all walks of life – last week offered many. Futurists, Trend Analysts, Economists, Designers, Marketing Consultants, Researchers, Ethnographers, Trend Bloggers, Cultural Anthropologists, Fortune 500 CEO’s,  Innovation Specialists…and many more.  Over the next few posts i will attempt to share some of the insights gained over the intense 3 days of workshops and presentations.  Some of them heavy…(see below) and some not so much!

The first  (and heaviest!) Keynote speaker was John L. Petersen, President and founder of The …
