This week “The Roots”..

http://www.vimeo.com/12858183

As I gear up this week for a lot of writing, I wanted to keep you guys in the loop on what we’re playing in the studio. Last week was a big mix-up with Chatham County Line, Trentemoller, The Beatles, and MGMT. But this whole week, I’m dedicating to The Roots.

Images Of…

NDP Collage-sm

I’m always interested to find out what HOKers do in their spare time when they’re not in the office. There’s always a great travel story or a profile of an individual and their volunteer work, and it’s great to find out what makes everyone tick in the HOK community. As I’ve been quite busy in my time away from the office lately, I wanted to share a little of what I’ve been up to when I’m not helping out our sustainable design practice in San Francisco.

Always been fascinated with images that capture a moment. When you see something that catches your eye, you may not even understand why, …

TEDx Atlanta * Zoe Keating

YouTube Preview Image

TEDx Atlanta never seems to fall short of their performers at the two events so far. Last time I wrote about how my socks were blown away by Eric Lewis and thought there was no way the guys at Unboundary could come up with someone to rival him. However, I was proved wrong. For the second installment of TEDx Atlanta, Re:Purpose, I was blown away yet again by the powerful and seductive cello of Zoe Keating.

Zoe has an amazing background story, which involves her being a classically trained cellist at the age of 8 before entering a ‘phase’ of her life where she becomes a software engineer and information architect during the dot-com boom.

As all …

Graphic Skills

Wow. I am sorry. Looks like I went missing for awhile there.  It’s a long sordid tale of pirates and space travel and problem-solving and saving small children from hungry giants, which I’ll get into at a later date.

In the meantime, check out this video I’m currently obsessed with. It’s of a fantastic song called Two Weeks by the band Grizzly Bear.  The graphics are ridiculous (I’m about as jealous of this Gabe character’s skills as I am of the renderers here in our DC office) – make sure you make it to minute 3:35.  Enjoy!

Sometimes when I get in the mood for Aphex Twin, I cant stop listening to the same songs over and over.

This video doesn’t have anything to do with AT, but I cant stop watching it!

Food 4 Thought – If Michael Jackson’s music was architecture, what would it look like?

There is no doubt about the fact that Michael Jackson was a creative genius.  Upon reflecting on his untimely demise last week, I began to think about the impact that he has had on the entertainment industry and pop culture around the globe.  Without taking into consideration his infamous Neverland Ranch (MJ was not a designer), I would like to pose the question, “What would the architecture of Michael Jackson’s music look like?

These are the factors that I might consider when developing my theories about the answer(s) to this question:

1. His incredible talent and ability to literally move people all over the world.
2. His perfectionist nature.
3. His eccentricity.
4. His electricity.
5. His expressed encouragement …

Praveen & Benoît / Shigeto Remix

Alright, I’ve been crazy-busy these last few weeks and no time to post, however that being said I’d have to be dead not to notice this.

I’m voting this Best Remix of Quarter 1 2009.

I’m not going to say anything about bootstraps, chinstraps, jockstraps, or any other kind of strap. Just listen.

& Enjoy.

Ladies of the Night

I was sitting front row centre, right on the aisle. I had made sure to dress appropriately for the occasion. Sweater vest, tweed jacket with leather elbow pads, black leather zipper tie, and slicked-back hair; I honestly was just trying to fit in with the crowd. It’s not every day the bingo hall has a concert.

He came onto the stage with a swagger in his step, a glass of water in his hand, and a set of desire in his eyes. Even before he said his first word of, ‘Hi’ the ladies were yelling his name and attempting to rush the stage. I honestly just looked around, trying to figure out what was going on. It’s not every …

Live from Toronto…

I contemplated the subject of my first blog post thoroughly. To be completely honest I was quite nervous, I even picked Justin’s brain about his technique – “Jessica, all you have to do is be yourself.” And with those 9 simple words Justin was able to kick apprehension right out the door!

So let me tell you a bit about myself. I began my career in Marketing by attending the Canadian Automotive Institute for Automotive Marketing. After college I quickly realized I did not want to limit myself to one industry, more specifically a dying industry (as it stands right now), and began to look elsewhere. I explored the realms of retail and information technology, before finding an environment …

Rockin’ in the Office

—-UPDATED WITH SONG TITLES & ARTISTS—-

Recently, music has been intersecting in both my personal and professional lives. Professionally, this relates to the discussion of whether it is appropriate to use headphones at work . The office was pretty divided (and yes, the divide was pretty much Gen X & Y vs. the Boomers & Veterans). Arguments against headphones were that individuals miss out on the studio chatter about their projects and can be limited in their professional development if they are constantly plugged into music. Arguments for headphones were that the studio can be a loud environment and headphones are helpful for concentration or sending a signal not to disturb unless it’s important.

I personally tend to …

Some Tiny Audio Chops, Some Chops Indeed

Not certain about how purposeful they could be, but I love the concept!

If I say I need a little more song and dance in my life… I’m sure this could do the trick!

In the Heights | Music + Architecture

As most of my friends know, if I didn’t love architecture, I would probably be knocking on every door in Manhattan praying for a role in any Broadway show. I’ve even said, if I had one wish, I’d probably wish everyone would break into song and dance in the middle of the day (and sometimes I do). When every one’s gone for the day and I’m alone in the office (or at least I hope I am), I turn on the speakers, play some Latin song, and sing my little heart out while I work. Yes, I’m one of those that you have to tap on the shoulder occasionally because they …

What I’m listening to now…Eero Johannes

Thought I’d drop a line in here about what I’m listening too. I would equate listening to Eero to eating a fresh carrot. Which is a good thing!

Check out his music here and here. I
