The crowds have left, the sponsor vans are hitting the road, and hotdog wrappers are about all that’s left behind. Allstar Game week is sadly over here in St. Louis, but we surely savored every moment of it. I had the opportunity to attend Monday night’s Homerun Derby with my stylish colleague Jaki thanks to our friends at Fleishman Hillard. We sat about 8 rows off the field and got to see the NL players up close and personal, like our very own – Albert Pujols.
We really enjoyed performances by former American Idol contestant Nikko Smith (Ozzie Smith’s son) and of course my …

We were enjoying our Friday afternoon snacks and counting down the minutes until we could fly the coop, when all of a sudden, the Corporate Communications team was paged to the front desk. Hmmm, who could it be?
To our surprise, it was the crew from St. Louis Magazine! They were armed with a very glossy framed magazine cover of their newest issue featuring the St. Louis A-List 2009. As our eyes scanned to the bottom of the cover, we saw in big, bold print….”Company Blog: HOK“!!! We were handpicked as the best blog!! Hooray!!
We really ARE the A-team! Thanks to all the awesome bloggers …

As many of you know from Mike’s previous blog post, I recently got married. Before I jet-setted to the South Pacific with my new hubby, I eagerly counted down the days until arriving on beautiful Maui, the place I had always dreamed of going on my honeymoon. When we arrived, I remember thinking of the movie Jurassic Park when the island appeared through the clouds. (Later, I learned JP was filmed on the neighboring Hawaiian island of Kauai.) One of the very first sites I saw were wind turbines cascading down the West Maui Mountains. When I returned home from …

It’s official. After months of planning, re-planning, waiting and anticipating, our little girl has finally tied the knot to her beloved (AKA Jeff) on Saturday.
The newly branded Rachel Peine (rhymes with shiny) stepped out in style in a lovely organza gown. Husband Jeff was equally gussied – and a bit juiced up on Love Potion #9.
Not a single drop of rain fell on this glorious day (despite a forecast that predicted otherwise).
A small group of her HOK co-workers witnessed the blessed event, ensuring no missteps in the reciting of the vows. We were wined + dined + treated …

If I actually knew how to golf, I would have raced out to Forest Park this past weekend — what a beautiful weekend it was – for the Third Annual Putting for Pooches Golf Tournament. I am a self-professed animal lover – here’s a pic of my basset hound Annabelle.
HOK had two teams in the 3rd Annual Putting for Pooches Golf Tournament. The team made up of Jeff Strohmeyer, Bob Blaha,

It’s fair to say RecycOlympics was a huge success in HOK St. Louis, as it came to a close in the final medal rounds.
You’ll see in the “podium” photo above, some participants walked away with quite a bit of bling.
From top left: Rocco Danna, Gold – Coffee Cup Marathon, Silver – Paper Airplane Javelin, Silver – Business Card Tower Building, Silver – Recycling Bin Basketball, Bronze – Rubberband Archery; Michelle Pinkston, Gold – Business Card Tower Building; Eric Romano, Gold -Rubberband Archery, Gold – Airplane Javelin, Silver – Coffee Cup Marathon, Silver – Business Card Tower Building; Jeff York, …
Yesterday as I was getting ready to leave the office, I heard some faint music playing. As I walked toward the rear exit, it got louder and louder…what did I find? None other than my friends in the HOK Planning Group watching videos on YouTube (don’t fret, it was WELL after normal business hours ). I’ve seen the Filipino prisoners dancing to Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and YouTube videos of late night dance parties in university libraries, but this one was new. The particular video they were watching was of a flash mob performing a beautifully choreographed performance of “Doe, a Deer” from the Sound of Music.
It got me thinking….is there a fun way to use flash mobs …
Majestic music has been bellowing throughout the floor at HOK St. Louis today to commemorate the first-EVER RecycOlympics!!! In honor of Sustainability Awareness Month and the firm’s upcoming “Go Barefoot Day”, HOK’s celebration for Earth Day, we are having special activities and events to raise awareness about reducing waste that goes into our world’s landfills.
RecycOlympics is the brainchild of our sustainability crew in St. Louis, and our team went all out on the event. All proceeds raised from employees who participated will go to Earthshare.
Today’s events included rubberband archery, airplane javelin, recycle bin basketball and business card tower building. Of course all materials used are recycled! I think HR might have a heart attack if they see people …
HOK’s Structural Engineering group held its 2nd Annual Pi Day Celebration in the St. Louis office on Friday. To commemorate the mathematical day (3.14), they brought in tons of tasty pies to share with the entire office. The team also held a contest to see who could remember the most decimals of Pi.

According to Wikipedia, Pi or π is a mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any circle’s circumference to its diameter in Euclidian space; this is the same value as the ratio of a circle’s area to the square of its radius. It is approximately equal to 3.14159 in the usual decimal …

My personal goal is to continue to capture the HOK love around the firm.
Bloggers Barry and Jaki were sporting HOK’s logo this morning just because they wanted to. Aww! Isn’t that sweet?
Here’s Jaki’s love:

And one of my favorite photos that I took last year at our blogger event in St. Louis outside of the Washington University Center for Advanced Medicine — an HOK project.

I don’t usually link to articles unless I think they are really cool, and this one caught my eye from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. This guy who lives in Festus, Missouri, has received national attention for his pleas to save his cave house from being foreclosed on. Despite being in a recession, he has received phone calls from as far as Paris!
He originally purchased the cave on Ebay, and now he re-posted the home on the site with a $300,000 starting bid, but he’s hoping someone will loan him the money, so he can keep it. What a cool place!

Media Relations Manager Mike Plotnick (left) and Sustainable Marketing Coordinator Barry Sutherland had no idea they dressed alike today. Sounds a little fishy to me! : ) (Photo taken at HOK St. Louis.)
There are several upcoming career fair annoucements that have been posted to the HOK Careers Facebook page.
Check out the universities HOK plans to visit. There will be information distributed during these events — maybe even a prize giveaway! HOK people will be manning the booths to answer questions about what it’s like to work at the firm.
Keep checking back because more events will added throughout the upcoming months.

I think it’s great that even during the tough economic times our HOK Atlanta Office helped a local school in need during the holidays. They raised more than $2,000 for the John Hope Elementary School, located in the city’s Fourth Ward. The money was used to purchase 320 school uniforms to help out low-income families who cannot afford them and also was used to purchase books for the school library.

HOK has launched a new “HOK Careers” page on Facebook! Whooo hooo…
As a part of the firm’s ongoing recruiting efforts, we hope that prospective hires can use the site to inquire about upcoming recruiting events and pose questions to us about what it’s like to work here! It’s just another way to let the world know about us! Features on the page allow fans to discuss trends and topics using the Discussion Board, ask questions or make comments on the Wall, and keep updated about upcoming events.
If your a current HOK employee, tell your friends! Anyone who is on Facebook …

Today Mike and I almost wanted to shoot ourselves after publishing the internal newsletter, so y’all better love the latest edition of HOK Today. Read it ….. every word of it. Or else. I really think everyone should read the article quoting Joe Pettipas (a shout out to our Toronto folk).
What’s cool about this pick up is that it was a result of a great pitch courtesy of HARO. It’s a great idea developed by Peter Shankman (go read his blog) where reporters send him requests for …
