HOK Tampa’s Anna Vasquez and I participated in the 4th annual Bike Bash by the Bay to promote green connectors to the urban core. The green connector concept promotes a car free artery into the central business district from surrounding neighborhoods. It provides a multi-modal alternative that is safe and direct while offering a healthy and sustainable option.
We have been presenting our Urban Greenway project all around the bay to various groups and committees and really liked the input shared by the citizens at the Bike Bash. We asked them to share their favorite bike moment with the community by writing it on our table. Needless to say, there were some amazing moments documented; many wrote about how they …

The expressway is a constant feature in our environment no matter how big or small the city is. The path dedicated to cars traveling at speeds which are prohibited elsewhere is incorporated into its surroundings with only destinations in mind. In Tampa, it has segmented the city, divided historical neighborhoods in half, and created a “waste-land” in between. A similar issue was addressed in a recent post by Justin in Toronto named “that thing in the middle.”
What is this waste-land? Is it really a waste of land sheltered by a lifted highway, or can it be more. Anna Vasquez (another designer here in the Tampa office) and I plan to investigate this topic with the …
Not that Alice ‘Char’ Martin in the HOK Tampa office could not have been an architect, a project manager or the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, but having three kids and moving to a new state every three years with a military spouse does not make achieving certain career goals easy. However, that did not stop Char, who recently attained her HOK PM Certification.
As I rushed past her desk one morning, Char told me that she had passed her PM Certification exam. I could not help but puff up with pride. With so much negativity in the news lately, it was invigorating to hear that someone was pushing through and rising up despite a lack of reward. If she can do …

One morning during the recent HOK Marketing Conference in Tampa, three renegade Corporate Communicators ventured out on their own. Foregoing the captivating Deltek training session, they chose to visit the HOK-designed Florida Aquarium and interact with its occupants and guests. Although this activity was not listed on the official conference agenda, it was fully sanctioned by the conference organizers, the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce and the entire Deltek organization.
For those who didn’t opt to participate in this alternative work session, we have produced a short video compilation of our learnings.
So here I am, at the outset of a two-day, information-filled marketing conference for all of the HOK marketing staff. There are expectations aplenty for the more than 40 of us in attendance. New HOKers (myself included) are trying to figure out what Life at HOK (marketing) is all about. More seasoned HOKers are hoping to put faces with names. Here are some of the faces at the introductory phase…

Where will this meeting go? Stay tuned and I’ll try and provide some updates….
